“A Person’s True Character Is Revealed by What He Does When No One Is Watching.”
When I was in high school, that quote was painted on the wall on the third floor. Every time I saw these words, it grabbed my attention and the message stayed with me. I would think about it when I stayed after practice, alone, to hit off the tee. I thought about it when I went for runs by myself. What standard was I going to hold myself to when nobody else was around to judge me?
Yesterday on Facebook, I saw a video (below) and it made me think of this quote. I immediately felt compelled to give this video attention and asked for permission to share it. In today’s world, kids see too many highlights. They see the strikeouts and home runs and the diving plays. But this video is the stuff that needs to be celebrated. This is where you define the type of player you will be.
Some will say, “It must be nice to have a batting cage at your house.” I promise this has nothing to do with a batting cage. It is about the decision to put the work in. It is the vision that work NOW will create results LATER.
And while you probably don’t have a batting cage at home, I bet you have an alarm clock. What does it take to wake up a little early? You have the same opportunity to improve yourself as this young man does. Every. Single. Day.
What choice will you make? What will you do when no one is watching?
Read the caption on the video. That work ethic (and swing) belongs to a 10 year old.
And one last thing… I’m not doing this to draw attention to this specific player. Who he is isn’t as important as who he is. You feel me??
